Your first cruise should feel exciting, not confusing. This page covers the big stuff in plain words, so you can stop Googling and start counting down to sail-away. Small town feel, big reach: I plan from East Tennessee and book first-timers all over the map.
What’s included in a cruise fare
Most fares include your cabin, main dining rooms, buffet, a lot of the entertainment, pools and the kids clubs. Things that usually cost extra:
- Daily gratuities (service charges)
- Specialty restaurants
- Alcohol, specialty coffee and most sodas (unless you buy a package)
- Wi-Fi
- Shore excursions
- Spa treatments
Every cruise line handles this a little differently, which is exactly why a quick chat with me saves surprises.
Picking your cabin
- Inside: the budget-friendly pick. Dark, quiet and great for sleeping in.
- Oceanview: a window to the sea, nice natural light.
- Balcony: your own outdoor spot for coffee at sunrise.
- Suite: more space and often extra perks, depending on the line.
Worried about seasickness? Cabins on lower decks near the middle of the ship usually feel less motion.
Embarkation day, step by step
- Check in online and pick your arrival window.
- Pack a carry-on with documents, medicine, a swimsuit and sunscreen.
- Drop checked bags with the porters at the terminal.
- Go through security and check-in, then walk aboard.
- Grab lunch, explore and get ready for the muster drill.
Documents
Document rules depend on your itinerary and citizenship. Check the official guidance at the U.S. State Department passports page and U.S. Customs and Border Protection travel information for U.S. citizens. I’ll point you to the right info for your sailing.
